It is a scientific fact: Snowstorm cooking edition
So this blizzard is about to hit chicago something fierce. Am I correct in thinking that a gas over will be fine even if the electricity cuts out? SIDE question: I want to get snowed in and make my own chicken wings. Looking at doing it crockpot style, anyone know a good way to do this in the home or a great sauce to make?

Google Starts Censoring BitTorrent, RapidShare and... →
wilwheaton: It’s taken a while, but Google has finally caved in to pressure from the entertainment industries including the MPAA and RIAA. The search engine now actively censors terms including BitTorrent, torrent, utorrent, RapidShare and Megaupload from its instant and autocomplete services. The reactions from affected companies and services are not mild, with BitTorrent Inc., RapidShare and...

Library Man: On Claude Lévi-Strauss →
No one doubts Lévi-Strauss was the author of important works and the purveyor of powerful insights, but the suspicion remains that behind his fantastically rigorous analyses of Amerindian culture there operated a deeply impressionistic and idiosyncratic mind at odds with any general theory. Some accused him of reducing the meaning of human existence to an arbitrary stock of contrasting flavors:...

Dear MSNBC, You have just told me, in your breaking news headline, that you are reporting what a congressmen’s assistant said about a budget that has not been finalized and formally introduced yet. ONCE THEY'RE SMOKED
oldtobegin: GET IT???? This struck me as a Norm Mcdonald style “non-punch line” Where he says something entirely normal but with the inflection of a punch line and it makes everyone kind of nervous and that is how he gets the laugh. I find that kind of punchline to be HILARIOUS. Not for the joke itself but for what it does to the audience.  I was in my living room crying with...

What happens when mom unplugs teens for 6 months? →
twigl: Simplify, simplify! primalpalette: Ok, don’t totally unplug or we’ll miss you, but this is a fascinating article on the benefits of moderating our digital stimulation. So this article is kiiiiind of bullshit. Heart is in the right place, but I feel like there’s a lot of couched fear of an older generation playing out in a looked-for conclusion.  I feel like the difference...

Bad Science →
The basic thrust of this study is that video games are addictive and that “There might be trouble brewing behind the glassy eyes of kids who spend too much time and energy on video games,” They fear that children are becoming, ahem…”‘screenagers”. So how did these scientists determine this to be true? “The kids also answered ten questions to find out...

A good friend of mine writes good reviews for (sometimes) good albums. Dude just wrote a review for the recent Dismemberment Plan reissue that choked me right up, and I didn’t even listen to that album until like 2006.

thedailywhat: In Case You Missed It of the Day: Jon Stewart offers his thoughts on the tragic shooting in Tucson. [tds.] See Also: Stephen Colbert’s reaction. So I am coming 12 hours late to this game. Putting aside any grievances people might have with this guy (hiring practices, dickishness in real life, etc), The way he processes tragedy is something to marvel at. Both in this instance...

So I took a bunch of work home this weekend with the specific idea that it would be GREAT to have it done when I walk in the door monday morning. I was diligent. I worked for three hours on saturday morning and two hours on sunday. Five weekend work hours is like 10 weekday work hours. It was awesome. and it is also still on my laptop at home where I did not think to save it to google docs, just...

Found this in the comments section of an msnbc news brief “Boner is a big ole titty baby.” That is basically going to go through my head every time I read about the house now. Thank you, the internet. Your bounty, as ever, is plentiful.

Ok last political post for a bit, but I need help...
Politically apt tumblrs, help me out. I want to be sure I’m on level with the proposed filibuster change. Am I correct in thinking that the proposed change wouldn’t end the filibuster, just make it so that only one person can be a part of any specific filibuster (rather than filibustering in shifts which would allow it to last far longer), and that it adds power to the minority...

Today's Lesson: How to Congress →
I absolutely think this is great. The first or second day of every new congress (i.e. this is the 112th, after the next election it’ll be the 113th, 114th etc) should have a reading of the constitution. It just seems like good practice.
