Spotlight Marginalia

Boston. Fucking horrible.

I remember, when 9/11 went down, my reaction was, “Well, I’ve had it with humanity.”

But I was wrong. I don’t know what’s going to be revealed to be behind all of this mayhem. One human insect or a poisonous mass of broken sociopaths.

But here’s what I DO know. If it’s one person or a HUNDRED people, that number is not even a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a percent of the population on this planet. You watch the videos of the carnage and there are people running TOWARDS the destruction to help out. (Thanks FAKE Gallery founder and owner Paul Kozlowski for pointing this out to me). This is a giant planet and we’re lucky to live on it but there are prices and penalties incurred for the daily miracle of existence. One of them is, every once in awhile, the wiring of a tiny sliver of the species gets snarled and they’re pointed towards darkness.

But the vast majority stands against that darkness and, like white blood cells attacking a virus, they dilute and weaken and eventually wash away the evil doers and, more importantly, the damage they wreak. This is beyond religion or creed or nation. We would not be here if humanity were inherently evil. We’d have eaten ourselves alive long ago.

So when you spot violence, or bigotry, or intolerance or fear or just garden-variety misogyny, hatred or ignorance, just look it in the eye and think, “The good outnumber you, and we always will.”

All of this. Man was made with a heart and a fist. The fucking anxiety I feel when shit like this happens is crippling. I’m going to the gym now, and reupping my EMS certs once we move to Boston.

Shelter - a game in which you play as a mother badger who needs to protect her young.

I am REALLY intrigued by this. How crazy sad will it be when I am bad at it and have to deal with baby badger death at the hands of like an hawk or a stream or something?

The first thing I thought of when I saw this was “This would be an AWESOME sequel to Bastion”

making my rpg: classes

Working on ideas for classes for this contemporary tabletop rpg idea. Maybe art school postgrads can have a mixture of empathy based abilities and artistic abilities that can function as telepathic and illusion skills.

The “Professional” class, which needs a much better name, can have math based attacks a la the calculator in FF tactics. Maybe they have “motivation” skills that act like boosts to initiative or dexterity.

“The Creative” could function as a support class in some way. good team skills, uses kickstarter in some way.

Maybe a science based class that uses science as a stand in for traditional magic? Fire and Ice whatnot.

I have no idea how any of this would actually function yet, but it’s fun to think about.

Hey! Remember these guys? Duh dut duh dut dah dut duh duh dut dahhhh!

I want to see a crossover comic of this version of Ed with Gau from ff6 going on some kind of fun adventure. Gau keeps Jumping on Ein. Ed’s dad maps the Veldt. Cyan and Jet cameo to look sternly at them for a while before walking off to have tea and talk about their days on the force.

Rather than work

Thinking of starting a little creative project. In the last few months I’ve played Dungeons and Dragons for the first time, which by the way is REALLY fun, and I think I want to make a little contemporary genre’d tabletop game. Make up some classes, player races, etc. some fine jokes weaved into abilities and whatnot. ideas are percolating.

Lessons from my home state of Indiana, along with Ohio, Michigan, and Wisconsin, can breathe new life into the national Republican Party. The stories of the governors, mayors, state office holders and others who have cut taxes and balanced budgets are worth knowing and emulating in part because they have done what Washington has been incapable of doing.

I hope with every little piece of me that the national Republican party tries to govern exactly like Ohio, Michigan, and Wisconsin have been governing. It will be like watching Hemingway try to shoot sharks.

So I was a total Star Wars kid, not a Star Trek kid, and I am finally in the midst of my first real watchthrough of TNG. I find myself making up little Data quotes in my head in response to things ALL the time.

Between that and Worf being absolute comedy gold, I am pretty pissed that I fell into the Lucas camp first.
